Meeting venue: Hotel Diego de Almagro. San Pedro de Atacama.
San Pedro de Atacama is a small oasis town in the middle of the driest desert on earth. It is in the Altiplano, the Andean plateau. It is at a relatively high altitude (2,400 meters above sea level, ~8,000 feet) which may require some adaptation. While days are normally warm (20-25oC), nights are very cold. Also, in the Southern summer, there are frequent high altitude thunder storms, with snow at the higher elevations and strong winds. You should consider bringing adequate clothing for warm and cold temperatures, plenty of sunscreen, hat and sunglasses. There are many thermal hot springs in the area so a bathing suit is recommended to take advantage of these sites. Many of the excursions that visitors can make are to very high altitude sites. For instance, the geisers at El Tatio are at an altitude of 4,300 m.a.s.
